You write a project in blocks. A block can be a chapter, a scene, or any piece of the story you like. Readers read your blocks in journeys, so a block is also the unit you share with them.
Writing happens on the web. The Fictional Crowd app shows your projects and progress, but has no editor yet.
The editor
Open your project's content to reach the editor. It has three parts:
- Blocks, on the left: every block in the project. Choose + Block to add one, and drag blocks to change their order.
- The page, in the middle: the block's title and text.
- References, on the right: notes about your story's characters, locations, items and anything else you want to keep to hand. They're for you, and stay visible while you write.
The status bar at the bottom shows the block's words, characters, estimated reading time and readability.
Saving
Autosave is ON by default: your work saves a moment after you stop typing, and again before you leave the page. You can turn it off from the status bar and save yourself.
If a block grows close to the size limit, the status bar warns you. Split it into two blocks before it gets there.
Block details
The tabs beside a block hold more about it:
- Info: when the block was created and last updated, and by whom.
- Notes: private notes about the block. Readers never see them.
- History: earlier versions of the block, by day. Select one to read it. History is read-only, so to bring back old text, copy it from there and paste it into the editor.
- Audio: upload a recording of the block. It unlocks as you earn writing points.
Editor formatting
Editor formatting changes the font, size, line spacing and light or dark display of the editor. Only you see it. Readers use their own settings.
