Joining a Journey

How to join a Journey and what happens next.

You can join a Journey while it's Open. Once the guide starts it, it's Active and doesn't take new readers.

Asking to join

Choose Join Journey on the journey's page, or on its project's page. If the project has more than one open journey, pick the one you want first.

Every request goes to the journey's guide. While you wait, the journey shows under Pending on your Home page, marked Awaiting approval.

A journey's Capacity is the number of readers the guide would like. It's a goal, not a limit, so a journey can still take you after it's reached.

When the guide answers

  • Approved: you get a notification, and the journey moves to Participating. You can open its activities straight away.
  • Declined: the journey drops off your Home page. You can ask again later, or look for another journey.

You can only be in one journey for a project at a time. If you're already in one, the project page offers Continue Journey instead.

When the journey starts

When the guide begins the journey, you get a notification. From then on, new activities arrive at the journey's Reading Pace. See Participating in Activities.

Taking a break or leaving

In the Fictional Crowd app, open the journey and choose Leave Journey. You're offered two choices:

  • Pause Journey: you stay a member, but you won't be notified of new activities, and can't take part in them, until you unpause. You can come back any time.
  • Leave Journey: you're asked why, which helps the guide, and the journey comes off your Home page. If the journey is still open, you can ask to join again.

Pausing for yourself is different from the guide pausing the whole journey. When a journey is Paused, nobody can take part in its activities until the guide picks it up again.
